At or near the surface of the earth

5 channel audio composition, transducers, amplifiers, fog
installed at Headlands Center for the Arts
A 5-channel sound and fog installation fraught with metaphors of war questions the relationship between obscurity and garish visibility by immersing the viewer in an environment that dampens the capability to see and be seen while also affecting the travel of sound through space. Five hidden transducers transform the walls, floors, and windows of a building into speakers that can be felt and heard, each playing a site-specific recording developed over time with the resonant tones of the room. What results is a sense of calm that conflicts with the sensation of a constant hovering helicopter or the tension between fog or mist as a spiritual and transcendent visuality with the sense of visual erasure.
