In Farsi and Arabic, nafas means breath or air; it is a life-sustaining force that symbolizes existence, the essence of one's being, and is used as a term of endearment. The object Nafas emerges from Ghatel, a series mapping aerial views of qanat systems, as embossments of my breath on cotton rag paper. This psychomagic act is further transformed into an optical-clear glass-like 3D print of my breath. Mirroring water and geological form, I seek to render the hidden labor behind these tunneled waterways through my own breath, as every breath that shaped the waterways and every breath that was lost—tracing my own familial lineage across time.
